Children's Minister Beverly Hughes has suggested this week that flexible working policies, traditionally available only for parents with children under the age of 6 or disabled children under the age of 18, should be extended to all employees; much to the horror of the Small Business Federation!
Ms Hughes has highlighted that in today's busy environment, employees almost certainly have other commitments outside of work and that it's important that employers should now realise this.
Mathew Knowles, of the Federation of Small Businesses, questioned the governments understanding of how business is run, on the front line, asking "Who's going to be left to do any work?"
The Federation of Small Businesses records that the average number of staff in a UK small business is four. Mr Knowles suggests that if all of these staff could work flexibly, there would be periods of the day when no member of staff would be on hand to get the work done; much to the detriment of UK small businesses and the governments economy.
Would you like to work flexibly? Could your business survive with your staff working flexibly?
